From a Rodgers Forgian:
Kris-My husband and son were telling me today how there was a gray female cat w/ white on her chest and belly that was hit at the corner of Dunkirk and Dorking yesterday late afternoon. Our next door neighbor saw it get hit and took it to Falls Road Animal Hospital where it was put down due to the extent of the injuries. I am not sure if this is the sweet cat that was a stray that was adopted down by the tot lot as I have seen her up this way sometimes. She apparently had a flea collar on but no other identifying information.I am sure this kitty was loved by a family and may be looking for her. I am sad to share this kind of news but if it were me, I would want to know.

NPR: "People fear roundabouts in America — they've been called 'Circles of Death,' Tom Vanderbilt says. "And nothing could be further from the truth."
The geometry of a roundabout eliminates one of the most dangerous moves you can make in driving: a left turn against fast-moving oncoming traffic. Also, since traffic circles involve a lot of other drivers and a driver is not relying on signs and symbols, drivers must make their own decisions and be aware of other traffic. -- read more

Have you read this blog by a woman who lives a stone's throw from here? She's pretty funny. Our kids went to the same preschool but I've only talked with her in passing and that was a few years ago. She writes about lingerie, fun in the bedroom and other such stuff.

From a mom that I know:
I was walking at about 5pm with the kids along Pinehurst and I was in the 6400 block [this is about one block past Rodgers Forge and kind of behind the Giant] when we were approaching a part of the sidewalk which is somewhat obstructed by large pine trees and is pretty dark. I could see some people in there up ahead and as I got closer I heard a girl who I though was laughing. But then she started saying "can you please help me?"
I was confused for a moment because I saw other people in there and I wondered why they weren't helping. I came closer and she came up and pointed to the other girls who who going through something that was on the ground (it turned out to be her backpack). She said "they hit me in the face and took my cell phone and money." They were so brazen that they didn't even run away when I came up. I had to yell at them to stop and say that I'm going to call the police right now before they finally started walking away. The victim is in middle school and the other girls seemed to be high-school age.
I followed a little bit but couldn't leave my kids there and sadly did not have my cell phone on me. I walked the girl to my neighbor's house because she knows them. She said they were two girls and they had masks on. It was so shaded in there that I didn't really notice the masks but they did seem like girls as they were running away. They appeared to be African American and the victim said they came out of Shwartz Rd.
My kids were pretty shocked needless to say. That poor girl. She had a bit of a mark on her face where they hit her. She thought her mom would be mad at her for losing her cell phone.

A friend just told me that she recently used Thumbs Up Party for her daughter's birthday party and it went very well. I'd never heard of them before.
She said, "It's a great resource. They did everything. Brought all the decorations, provided costumes, party hosts ran games, crafts, dancing, provided cake, transformed my dining room (super fancy). I only provided juice. Then they cleaned up everything and left."
I would for sure do this if the price included a pre-party cleaning session.

Don't forget to secure your windows, too -- basement windows are one of the ways thieves are breaking in.

What is going on around here? I called Towson Police and they confirmed an armed robbery at this location.
Kris,
When we got to church this morning [Nov. 15], Woodbrook Baptist on Stevenson, there were 3 police cars and a K9 unit arrived thereafter. They were there to investigate the mugging of my son's Sunday school teacher, a woman in her late 70s, as she walked to church from her home in Rodgers Forge.
The assailant, a woman, only got her supplies for class but she was cut with a box cutter when she tried to explain she didn't have anything of value.
These are the details I have and I thought you would like to know about it. Very sad state of affairs this crime along Bellona and around the vacant apartments. I'll be in touch if I hear anything else about it.

It was announced tonight at the Rodgers Forge community meeting that volunteers have gathered enough signatures to get the speed humps on Dumbarton. They should be in by the end of the month if all goes according to plan and the weather allows. Kudos to Beth!
Note: These are not the kind of "bumps" that you find in parking lots at the mall. They are more gradual. The recommended speed to go over them is 22 mph -- 3 mph slower than the speed limit. They will not be a jarring bump (unless you're going 40 mph).
Heathfield is also getting two speed humps; signatures have already been gathered.

My son and a friend were walking at 3:15 PM today and were on Stoneleigh Rd (about a block from York Rd) when two teenagers (high school age) stopped and talked to them about their skateboards. I was at Home Depot for something else today and saw that they have some inexpensive home alarm options. These might be useful to scare off thieves or at least let you know if they enter your home when you are there (the scariest scenario, in my opinion, when it comes to burglaries). Yes, the thief can just grab it and smash it or remove the battery, but it will delay him and possibly even deter. And at least they can't just cut the phone lines outside to turn off the alarm as they can if it runs through your landline.

As you have seen by the recent weekly incident reports, Towson has seen a real spike in burglaries. In some of these cases neighbors have called in suspicious activity that was related to a burglary so between you and I we've gotten the word out to call 9-1-1 and people have responded accordingly.
We at PC06 appreciate all the help you give to us and we're just asking that you continue to get the word out to your neighbors so that we can continue our joint effort to reduce this current trend, identify those involved and thus make Towson as safe as possible.
The suspect and vehicle descriptions included in the incident reports is what we're working on right now--mostly African-American Males, mid-late teens (Rodgers Forge suspect in his 30's driving a stolen Ford Taurus SW, silver, MD KMT869)--but as we develop more information we will forward it to you.

I received an email from a RF friend tonight saying he's heard that all toys are going to be removed from the Tot Lot and that signs will go up soon telling people not to dump toys. (A friend of his heard it from a park maintenance person.)
UPDATE: I spoke to someone who handles this for the county Park and Rec division and he said they will be posting signs soon saying that big plastic toys (ride-on cars, etc.) will not be allowed in the mulched areas. The county's insurance division is worried that a child will, say, fall from a swing or slide and instead of landing in mulch will land on a big piece of hard plastic and be seriously injured.
The person I spoke to said he's fine with having the plastic toys in the grassy areas or in the sandbox, but just not in the zones where there are play apparatuses. The play houses are fine. However, they will be doing checks and if they repeatedly find toys in the mulch area they will haul them away.
He also said that you can call his office (410-887-7844) if there are unsafe toys there that you think should be disposed of. He said just put them in a pile, call the office and they'll come get them. He was very nice and said he doesn't want to ruin anyone's fun but he wants to keep things safe.

Here's a press release from the LEGO people. The thought of attending this makes me cranky, but I'm sure some people would have a blast:
Grand opening of a new LEGO Store on Friday, November 6th at Arundel Mills. To celebrate the grand opening, a Team of Master Builders will help children build a custom 12-foot Christmas tree complete with packages and ornaments. Children get a free LEGO Certificate of Achievement for helping, while supplies last. [Really, free?!] Building continues throughout the weekend until the final LEGO is in place.
LEGO Stores house wall-to-wall product amidst three key design components. The “Pick-A-Brick Wall”, by far the hottest store feature, offers the option to purchase specific LEGO bricks and elements in a variety of colors and shapes in bulk. The “Living Room”, an interactive play area prominently positioned in the center of the store, gives consumers a chance to get “hands-on, minds-on” with LEGO products, view out of the box displays or just take a break from shopping. Finally, a “Brand Ribbon” runs the circumference of the store, featuring LEGO model displays, company history and fun facts to entertain guests.
