Over the past number of years I have heard from hundreds of people who expressed pro and con opinions over the issue of gay marriage. The conversations have been respectful, insightful and heartfelt. I support the current definition of marriage in Maryland law -- marriage is between one man and one woman.

I have concluded that the public interest in Maryland is best served by maintaining marriage as between one woman and one man. I am very uncomfortable, in my role as a state legislator, to brazenly attempt to re-define an institution that has been in existence for thousands of years. Re-defining marriage is not a civil rights issue, as some would insist.
