For RFES families with children entering Kindergarten, here is the scoop from Principal Deise on how the gradual entry will be affected by tomorrow's weather-related closure:
Monday gradual entrance students will be invited to come on Tuesday to make it fair for all the children. It will be the choice of the parents. All Kindergarten students will report on Wednesday. If a Monday gradual entrance student is unable to accept the invitation to come Tuesday, the youngster will not be considered absent.
Of course, school could be closed Tuesday, too, depending on how many outages and blocked roads remain. I am glad I'm not a teacher or administrator this week and having to deal with all this!

Recorded message from superintendent says 65 schools are without power and many roads are closed, so all county schools will be closed on Monday, August 29.

Attention families of 4 and 5 year old boys and girls (Pre-K and Kindergarten): Sign-up has begun and will be available to all interested families [open to all; not just church members]. Games take place on Friday evenings from 6:00-7:00 PM September 16 through October 28 on the fields behind St. Pius X School.
Rob of Citizens on Patrol says: A dumpster at RFES was torched a little after 9:00 last night. I discovered an empty 5oz bottle of lighter fluid by a tree next to the hard court around 7 a.m. Police were notified. Also, there was a vehicle fire at the Rodgers Forge Apartment complex around 2p.m. I'm not sure if that was a deliberate fire or an engine fire.

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is giving the polar bears a snow day in August, courtesy of Baltimore City Recreation and Parks and the Mt. Pleasant Ice Arena. The Zamboni shavings from Monday, Aug. 22, and the early morning shaving on Tuesday, Aug. 23 will be picked up and brought to the Zoo by Zoo staff. Approximately 2,000 pounds of ice shavings will be placed in the polar bear exhibit and at 10:30 a.m., the bears will come out to see a little winter wonderland in their exhibit.
The public is also invited to see this fun example of “cool” summertime enrichment for the bears! Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 at 10:30 a.m.
Good Day,
Please get the word out to the residents of the Rodgers Forge Community, especially those who own dogs, that between the Officers of Towson Precinct and the Animal Control Office for Baltimore County, we will be stepping up enforcement of the "Leash Laws" and "School Grounds" due to complaints received from those who use the athletic fields between Rodgers Forge Elementary School and Dumbarton Middle School.
We understand this has long been an issue on these fields, however people were not complaining to us in the past whereas now they are, with both calls to our 911 Center and Animal Control plus letters to Police Headquarters. At issue are safety and health concerns, persons utilizing the fields-both adults and juveniles-do not know how friendly or dangerous some of these dogs may be as they're void of direct owner control via the leash and when these dogs relieve themselves the owners are not right there to clean up and thus feces are left on the grounds creating unhealthy conditions for those playing on the fields.
Pet owners need to have their pets on leashes when outside their homes, they cannot have their pets roaming areas that are posted "No Pets" or "No Dogs" and they need to pick up after their pets when they relieve themselves. Failure to abide to these laws can result in Citations, Court appearances and fines.
Thank You,
Sgt Stephen Fink
On a related note, Councilman Marks is helping get a dog park in Perry Hall; maybe Rodgers Forgians could work with him to get one in this area, too. Also, the dog park in Robert E. Lee Park is set to open in October.

Lots of burglaries this week, including one on Regester in RF. Read the report here.
Also, a note from the police:
"Don't take anybody's word that they work for BGE -- ALWAYS request identification and contact BGE if still a question. BGE employees will welcome the request and the company encourages customers to call to verify their employees, contact information is usually included in the monthly bill.
Secure any outbuildings--garages, sheds, etc--on your property and if something cannot be locked do not leave valuable property inside if it cannot be secured another way. Don't leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. I know we all want the convenience of leaving things where they are and coming back to them later but the fact is others will find these things and take them from us so we must do better at securing our valuables.
Thanks, Sgt Fink"

From Science Friday: When marine biologist Roger Hanlon captured the first scene in this video he started screaming. (If you need to see it again, here's the raw footage.) Hanlon, senior scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, studies camouflage in cephalopods--squid, cuttlefish and octopus. They are masters of optical illusion. These are some of Hanlon's top video picks of sea creatures going in and out of hiding.

From Councilman David Marks: "I wanted to let you know of a road closure in the Parkville/Towson area. BGE will be removing two trees along Cromwell Bridge Road that have been deemed hazardous to the road and to BGE facilities. In order to effectively facilitate their removal, BGE will need to use a crane. Because of the width of the crane and the size of the working area, the road will be fully closed during the time the crane will be in operation.
As a result, Cromwell Bridge Road between Oakleigh Road and Satyr Hill Road will be closed on Saturday, August 13th. If heavy rain precludes working on the 13th, August 14th will be used as a back-up day. My understanding is that the work will begin at 9 a.m., and wrap-up by 4 p.m. Signs will be posted a few days before the closure.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but wanted to let you know about this as soon as I found out about it."

The Zoo is offering reduced admission on Tuesdays and by popular demand, the Zoo will be open until 7:00 pm on Thursdays.
Each Tuesday during August, the Zoo will offer a 25% discount on admission for tickets purchased at the gate, and each visitor will get a coupon for a free frozen popsicle or ice cream treat, redeemable at The Village Green. On Tuesdays we will also be highlighting some of our summer animal enrichment programs, and keepers will be on hand to talk to visitors about how they keep the animals cool in the summer.
The featured Tuesday enrichment schedule is:
· 10:30: Otter enrichment -- could be a pile of ice, ice treat, misters, sprinkler and a keeper will be available to talk to visitors.
· 11:30: Elephant enrichment will immediately follow the WILD encounter at 11:00 am.
· 2:15: Chimp enrichment during keeper chat will be smoothies, ice treats, sprinkler or another cool surprise.
· 2:30: Polar Bear enrichment during keeper chat, most likely ice treat or pile of ice.
On Thursdays in August, the Zoo will stay open late – until 7:00 pm – so people can visit into the early evening when temperatures should be cooling off just a bit. Prices will dip too, with tickets available for 50% off after 4:00 pm at the Main Gate. Guests can tour the zoo, listen to some live music and enjoy happy hour in the Jones Falls Zephyr Train Station. Bring the whole family, or make it a date night! http://www.marylandzoo.org/2011/07/beat-the-heat-august/
