Payment plan for Towson Swim Club

The pool board says this is the deal: $250 with application due by the end of February. Remainder of balance due in 3 equal monthly installments of $750 each due on April 15, May 15 and June 15. And if for some reason the pool doesn't happen, you get all your money back.

Sen. Jim Brochin's stand on marriage equality

Just received this email:

Last year, a historic milestone in Maryland and national history was achieved with the passage of the Civil Marriage Protection Act in the Maryland Senate.  However, as you probably know, the House of Delegates recommitted the bill to committee after several key supporters buckled under pressure from opponents.

This year, marriage equality legislation has returned to Annapolis with the Civil Marriage Protection Act (SB 241).  The bill remains nearly identical to the legislation introduced this past year, with additional protections and exemptions offered for religious institutions.  Today, Tuesday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m., the committee I sit on, the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, is holding hearings on the bill.  I voted with the Judicial Proceedings Committee to pass marriage equality last year by a 7-4 vote, and I will again vote for marriage equality when the bill comes to a vote in committee this year.

Senator James Brochin

The new Toss gourmet pizzeria on York Road is great

Like many of you, we received a Toss menu in our mailbox recently and decided to try it because it got good reviews on Yelp and, frankly, I liked the graphic design of the menu. The shop is located on York Road a couple blocks south of the Senator. We did carry out so that my husband could snap a few pictures.

The kids got half cheese/half pepperoni with traditional sauce and my son volunteered that, "This is GREAT!" and my daughter liked it, too. My husband and I got one with veggies and herbed olive oil instead of regular red sauce and it was fabulous. This will definitely be in heavy rotation in our house, although honestly I should be eating at a place where "toss" refers to salad and not pizza, but whatever!

PS: A friend just told me there's a Groupon for Toss right now. (Thanks, BF!)

Yup, there's a grave in the middle of the site of Towson Circle III

Here is a story in The Sun from 2005 about the cemetery -- located in the map photo in the top right at the corner near Shealy and Virginia avenues -- and how it might play into the Towson Circle III development. There are ads in the middle of the story, so keep scrolling down; it's a long article. Note in the story that important remains in Cockeysville were moved to make way for a Bob Evans restaurant. A Bob Evans.

Do you think this will be successful or will it suffer the same fate as the Towson Commons theater? Fingers crossed!

Sparks Cleaners on York Road is a green alternative for dry cleaning

I took a wool coat to be cleaned at Sparks Cleaners the other day and was really pleased. It came back soft and didn't have that chemical smell that so many dry-cleaned items emit. It's a "green" cleaner that eschews chemicals. The shop is located right next to Rita's and China Fun on York Road just south of Stevenson Lane.

Police say be on lookout for this possible copper thief

From the Towson Police: The Towson Investigative Services Unit is looking for a vehicle possibly responsible for copper gutter thefts in the Towson Precinct. Witnesses have provided the following information pertaining to the vehicle:

- An older pickup truck white in color with rust on the body. The truck also has a ladder rack affixed to the bed.

- The truck has "64P" in the beginning of a Maryland tag.

- The driver of the vehicle can best be described as a white male in his mid to late 50's with some facial hair.

Rules for parents of daughters

A friend posted this piece on Facebook today and I thought it was good, if not a little disturbing. (BTW, did you see the story about the "human Barbie" who gave her daughter a voucher for liposuction for her 7th birthday?)
Here are a few of the rules from the post:

Teach your daughter to like and respect herself and demand respect from those around her.  She might end up lonely at times, but at least she won't be a doormat.

Teach your daughter that "fish lips" photos are never appropriate and never attractive.

Read the whole list here. And here's a list for parents of boys.

Race to Nowhere showing on Jan. 12

Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 7:00 pm
at the McDonogh School
click here for details and free tickets

This is a great film!

Director Vicki Abeles turns the personal political, igniting a national conversation in her new documentary about the pressures faced by American schoolchildren and their teachers in a system and culture obsessed with the illusion of achievement, competition and the pressure to perform.

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.
