Fox in the Forge

From a friend who lives near the Tot Lot: "I went out on my back deck to put out recycling and looked across the alley only to find a fox hanging out on my neighbor's deck.  It was about 11 am which I thought was unusual for a fox to be out during the day.

Anyway, I am attaching a picture but thought people in the neighborhood would want to know especially those with pets."

I don't know that I've ever seen a fox in Rodgers Forge but I've definitely seen them in the surrounding neighborhoods. My son saw one yesterday outside of Brown Memorial.

Where do you get your Christmas tree?

We're going to visit Davidson Christmas Tree Farm this weekend and do the cut-your-own thing for the first time. Some friends have been going there for years and love it. We generally buy a tree from that spot on Stevenson across from Woodbrook Baptist but this year we want to try something new. If you celebrate Christmas, where do you generally get a tree?

Dog needs a home

A friend just posted this on Facebook: "My friend witnessed this dog being abandoned in the Target parking lot yesterday by a man who told her he couldn't care for him any longer. He is not a puppy, not a senior, and is very affectionate and good with her kids. He's now at her house, but she's not sure her dog is happy about his new friend. If anyone is interested in this sweet dog, please let me know. She's trying to spread the word, so feel free to repost his picture!" (You can email me at forgeflyer(at)gmail.com and I'll put you in touch with the person who has him.)

Corner Bakery fundraiser for DMS trip to Madrid

From the DMS PTA: "There will be a fundraiser at Corner Bakery Cafe at 823 Goucher Blvd. in Towson this Thursday, November 29th, from 4 pm to 9 pm. Corner Bakery Cafe will donate 15% of sales of those who mention Dumbarton Middle School or have a flyer to the Madrid trip fund for 8th grade foreign language students.

This trip will take place over Spring break and two of our teachers have volunteered to give up their vacation in order to lead this trip. Because BCPS will not allow the teachers to accept the free trip offered through the travel agency, we are trying to raise funds to cover the cost of their trips, plus the trips for two students who cannot afford to pay."

Possible incident at the tot lot

This was sent in from a reader yesterday. I've left out his description because it's not completely clear this was a predatory situation but I did feel it merited sharing:

"Hello. I live in Stoneleigh and frequent the tot lot often. Today I called police on a suspected child predator. A middle-aged white male was walking a puppy, with no children. He spent a long time lingering and was using the dog to engage children. He left when he spotted a police vehicle approach. I hope you can add this to your updates." (She said she's not sure if the police talked to the man or not.)

StarDate.org: "The best viewing for this year's Leonid meteor shower will be several hours before dawn on November 17. The shower should produce perhaps a dozen or so “shooting stars” per hour. The best view comes in the wee hours of the morning, as your part of Earth turns most directly into the meteor stream."

Changes on Rodgers Forge board

Three RFCA members have recently left the board: Jay Dunn, the newsletter editor, and Bill Grothmann have both resigned, and Mike Calwell has moved out of Rodgers Forge. Residents Michael Bayer, who has worked on Safe Routes to School, and Ryan Wagner have been named to replace them. RFCA President Stu Sirota said he plans to name the third replacement at the next board meeting. Jay Dunn said he will continue to edit the newsletter until a replacement is found.

Have you applied for the Homestead Tax Credit?

My neighbor works for a firm that does title work and she just gave me a heads up that many Marylanders -- including many in Rodgers Forge -- have not applied for the Homestead Tax Credit. This is a credit that used to be given automatically but a 2007 law changed the process and now you must apply for it and if you don't, you could lose a lot of money. The credit limits the amount by which taxes on your assessment can rise. (Once you've applied you don't have to do so again.)

The deadline to apply is December 31, 2012.

Here's some info from the state Department of Assessments and Taxation:

What is the law that requires homeowners to apply for the Homestead Tax Credit?
Legislation enacted by the 2007 session of the General Assembly requires homeowners to submit a one-time application in order to continue their eligibility for the homestead tax credit.  The homestead credit limits the amount of assessment increase on which a homeowner will pay property taxes in that tax year on the one property actually used as the owner’s principal residence.

Why should I want to submit the application?
Because of assessment increases and because of the low assessment caps adopted by the county governments, many homeowners in the State have been receiving substantial homestead credits each year on their property tax bills.

How do I file the Homestead Eligibility Application?
a.  File electronically: Request an application from the Department by sending an email to Hcredit@dat.state.md.us
The application mailed out to you will contain an Access Number so you may file electronically on our site at https://sdathtc.resiusa.org/homestead

b.   Mail the application: You may mail in the completed paper application the Department sends you. You may also print and mail the completed PDF copy of the application available on our web site.  Applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2012.

You can find out if you have already filed an application by looking up your property in the Real Property database.

If you have filed for the credit, you'll see this type of info at the very bottom of the screen:
If you haven't, you'll see this:
Find more info about the tax credit here:
http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/homestead.html

You might want to pass this along to friends/neighbors who might not be aware of the credit. My neighbor let several people on our block know that they had not applied for the credit and they were very appreciative.

Incident in Anneslie

An Anneslie resident sent me this, and he posted it to their listserv:

"This morning I observed a white male, in his late 20's early 30's, drive down my neighbor's driveway, behind his house, get off his bike, and look in his garage. The guy did not see me sitting on my deck having coffee.

I got in my car and followed him through our community while calling the police. This guy was going up peoples driveways, looking in their houses and garages in broad daylight, approximately 9:30 am. I lost him briefly then caught up with him again coming out from behind a house on Dunkirk across from the mansion. I followed up to York Road, where he finally saw me and took off across york and up the one way side of Overbrook. I met with police on York Road, who had dispatched about 6-7 cruisers to search for him. He was, as stated, a thin white male, late 20's early 30's wearing an orange fleece jacket and grey sweatpants, riding a black earth cruiser style of bike that was spray painted all black, with no visible logos or markings on the bike.

The police advised that he was most likely casing houses, yards, and garages for an opportunity to steal. Just wanted to let everyone know. I have no updates at this time regarding whether or not he was apprehended, or if the police found him."

Check your line if voting at Dumbarton

Good info from a reader:

Hi Kris,

I just came back from voting at Dumbarton MS. It seems there are two lines.

The line on the right (facing the school) seems to be for people who are normally registered to vote at Dumbarton MS. The line on the left seems to be for people who are normally registered to vote at Stoneleigh ES. (renovations).
It is not clearly marked (small, handmade signs) and I saw at least two people have to change lines after waiting in the wrong line.

Just a heads up for the Flyer.

(Short and sweet from my phone.)

Harry Little sub shop has closed

I talked to owner Christa Gunther today about the closure of what has become a fixture of the Rodgers Forge-Anneslie-Stoneleigh area. She took the business over about a year and a half ago from her father, Ed Rohe, who had owned it for more than 20 years. She said it was too hard to juggle a small business and her three kids and that she felt she had to focus on her family. Business had been down a bit, she said, but added that it was her need to spend more time with her kids that drove the decision. She doesn't know what will take over that spot but said the landlord had indicated he'd like it to be another food-related business.
